Did you know that a “professional” thief will monitor your home for months before actually breaking in and stealing your possessions. They know more than you do about your habits, who comes and goes and at what time of day, when you are most likely to take a vacation, what time you or a family member picks up your mail, when the mail carrier actually arrives, and whether you try to fool a thief by having lights in your home turn on or off periodically. They know how many cars your family owns, who drives which one and which vehicle is generally left sitting in the garage when no one is actually at home.

It’s pretty easy to protect your home against the small time burglar who is simply down on his luck and has turned to stealing in order to find something to sell for his next meal. A barking dog, and a well locked home with a siren you could install yourself might defend your home quite well against the amateur. The professional thieves—those looking for the real valuables that will then be sold on the black market—are much more skilled and harder to catch once they have taken your belongings. And even if you are lucky enough to find your possessions, they will usually have changed hands several times, making it nearly impossible to track the culprit.

Additionally, burglary is such a common problem, and the local police force has far more serious crimes to deal with—at least from their perspective—that little effort is put into finding the ones who break into your home. If the trail is easy, the burglars will be caught, but for every one that is caught, several more slip through the system.

Hard-wired or Wireless?
If you are either buying or building a new home, you need to regard the security system as a matter of priority.  A break in occurs every 4 minutes, usually during the day, and most often at homes that are unprotected. Just locking the door is not sufficient.

When you select your security system, you will choose between two basic types, a wired system or a wireless one. Most hard wired systems are installed in newly built homes as the wiring can be placed in the walls along with the rest of the electrical components. An older home or one that has never had an alarm system will probably be better suited to a wireless system. However, even a wireless system will require one or two holes to be drilled for the connection of the control panel to the power source and phone line.
